INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Indian River County Sheriff is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the citizens of Indian River County and also works with the municipal law enforcement agencies to provide support.
The calls for service in 2011 totaled 165,734. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, crime decreased by 6 percent in Indian River County in 2011. Types of crimes that decreased in 2011 included robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
The 4-year-term seat is currently held by Deryl Loar, who is seeking re-election. He faces one challenger, Bill McMullen.
The Sheriff earns an annual salary of $125,449. The Sheriff’s budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year is $39.25 million, which includes more than 500 employees. Those employees include sworn and non-sworn as well as part- and full-time employees.
The Sheriff’s Office executive staff includes an Undersheriff, three sworn Captains and one civilian Director who are responsible for managing the Judicial and Staff Services Division, the Support Services Division, the Law Enforcement Division, and the Corrections Division. In addition, the Sheriff’s Executive Staff also consists of a General Counsel, a Comptroller and a Director of Governmental Affairs and Media Relations.
