INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Clerk of the Circuit Court is responsible for maintaining court records and collecting all court-related fines and fees, serving as the accountant for the Board of County Commissioners, and serving as the official record keeper for the Board of County Commissioners. In addition, the Clerk’s office handles the recording of documents, selling of marriage licenses and applications for passports.
The four-year position was held by Jeff Barton, who retired six months before his term was to expire. Barton did not seek re-election and one candidate filed to fill the seat, Chief Deputy Clerk Jeff Smith.
Smith has since taken the post as Clerk of the Circuit Court and there will be no election come August.
The Clerk of the Circuit Court’s annual salary is almost $117,000. The clerk oversees the budget for the department, which was almost $959,800 for fiscal year 2011-12.
