Sebastian Councilman Gillmor qualifies for Congressional ballot

SEBASTIAN — Current Sebastian City Councilman Richard Gillmor has qualified by the petition method for the ballot in November in the Florida District 8 race for U.S. House of Representatives. District 8 consists of Indian River County, Brevard County, and a portion of Eastern Orange County. Redistricting in the State of Florida shifted what Gillmor was originally running for – District 15.

Republican Bill Posey currently holds that seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and is seeking re-election. Gillmor has filed as an Independent. Democrat David Gunter, of Melbourne, has also filed to run for the seat.

In meeting requirements, Gillmor collected more than 2,900 petitions, of which 2,345 were verified as valid. By Florida law, a candidate for this office must collect 2,298 petitions from registered voters within the state, or pay a filing fee of $10,000 to be on the ballot.

The candidate gave credit to his volunteers who helped secure the petitions and estimated that during the 4-month process they spoke to more than 10,000 registered voters.

Since announcing his candidacy in January, Gillmor has continued to serve out his term on the Sebastian city council while also serving as Chairman of the Treasure Coast Council of Local Governments, based in Fort Pierce. The Treasure Coast Council of Local Governments is a board made up of County Commissioners, Mayors, and School Board members from the four counties that make up the Treasure Coast – Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee.
