Clarence Bentley Sutherland, 89, Sebastian

Clarence Bentley Sutherland, 89, died May 23, 2012, at the Sebastian River Medical Center.

He was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, and moved to Sebastian 25 years ago from Lake Bluff, Ill.

He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II; and was a leading bomber ace, shooting down seven enemy planes.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Stars and Bars.

A book, “The One Eyed Gunner,” was written about his life.

He was a self-employed mason.

Survivors include his son, James Sutherland, of Sebastian; daughters, Marion Sutherland, of Napierville, Ill., and Pat Updegraff, of Mundelein, Ill.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
