Peter Fordham Mitchell, 86, Vero Beach

Peter Fordham Mitchell, 86, died May 23, 2012, at the VNA/Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Greenwich, Conn., and lived in Vero Beach for 22 years, coming from his birthplace.

He graduated from Greenwich High School, attended Norwich University of Vermont and attended Lehigh University as a civil engineering major.

He was employed from 1950 to 1952 as a mining engineer for Aeromayo Mining Co. in Bolivia, South America, and in 1952 to 1954 as general superintendent for Grove, Shepard, Wilson & Krueg contracting in French Morocco and in 1955 to 1957 as superintendent for J. Rich Steers of New York in Eritrea, Ethiopia.

From 1957 until retirement in 1989, he was president and owner of the Peter F. Mitchell Corp. and Peter Mitchell Construction, Leasing & Development Corp. of Greenwich, general contractors in Fairfield County, Conn.

He served as a first lieutenant bombardier navigator in the Army Air Forces during the World War II.

He was a former member, president and regional director of the Lions Club of Greenwich, Conn., and a member of Innis Arden Country Club of Greenwich, Hawk’s Nest Golf Club of Vero Beach and Vero Beach Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy S. Mitchell of Vero Beach; son, William Arthur Mitchell of Greenwich; daughter, Maggie O’Donnell of Oak Park, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. May 26 at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach in Vero Beach.

Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory Vero Beach.
