GIFFORD — The future of the Alternative Center for Education could be a little bit bigger now that the Indian River County School Board has accepted a donation of nearly an acre of land next door. What, exactly, the property would be used for has yet to be determined.
The property’s owner, Eva Glass, expressed interest in donating the land to the School District and an appraisal was done to help facilitate it. In all, the School District spent $2,100 from its capital budget for the acquisition, according to Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Carter Morrison.
The property’s value was appraised at $15,000, according to the School District.
The district’s Land Acquisition Committee previously met to discuss the donation, .89 acres located at 2700 47th Street, Gifford, and recommended approval to the School Board.
The property is currently heavily wooded and undeveloped, according to School District documents.
Morrison said after the School Board meeting Tuesday night that there are no plans on the books for the property and any use would be determined sometime in the future.
The School Board did not debate the donation, though Vice Chair Carol Johnson asked about the expense to the district to have the property appraised and an environmental site assessment conducted.
