Sheriff’s Office investigating late night shooting of man in Wabasso

WABASSO — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting of a man in the Wabasso area shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. The man drove to the Pelican Island Elementary School parking lot where he called authorities.

The man, identified as Melvin Walker, told authorities that he was driving his car in the 8600 block of 64th Avenue when he heard multiple gun shots and was struck in the arm. Emergency personnel arrived and transported Walker to Holmes Medical Center where he was treated for the gunshot wound to the right arm.

Detectives were unable to interview Walker immediately following his hospitalization due to his being medicated, the Sheriff’s Office. Instead, detectives interviewed witnesses in the area of the shooting. The witnesses told them they had seen the victim’s car in the neighborhood and that gunfire was coming from the vehicle.

Authorities towed the vehicle to the Sheriff’s Office compound and were waiting on a search warrant to get into the interior of the car. They noted a bullet hole was in the driver’s door and two bullet holes were in the driver’s rear door. They could not readily see a gun in the vehicle.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to Det. Kevin Heinig at (772) 978-6121.
