Eugene Nicholas DeMaio, 85, Vero Beach

Eugene Nicholas DeMaio, 85, died May 14, 2012, at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.

He was born in Wildwood, N.J., and lived in Vero Beach for 26 years, coming from Bethpage, N.Y.

Before retirement, he worked as a clerk for the Postal Service for 25 years in Westbury, N.Y.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was stationed in the Pacific Theater and transferred troops during the invasions of Okinawa and Guam.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lucille DeMaio; daughters, Diane Armstrong, of Emerson, N.J., and Jean DeMaio-Hefetz, of St. James, N.Y.; brother, Robert DeMaio, of Setauket, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to VAMC West Palm Beach Voluntary/Recreation Therapy Service at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 7305 N. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33410.

A memorial service will be in June in New York.

Arrangements are by Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.
