Volunteers needed to monitor, ‘trap-train’ scrub-jays

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Florida Scrub-Jay population in Indian River County has been increasing over the past several years, and to continue monitoring the success of habitat restoration work it is important to monitor and band the Scrub-Jay population.

Banding the scrub-jays helps to keep track of the number of families, number of individuals and where they are dispersing to.

Scrub-Jay families are now having young and volunteers are needed for training to assist with monitoring some of the families and “trap-training” them in preparation of banding.

Volunteers would be given about four hours of training by Beth Powell, Indian River Conservation Lands Manager.

Work will begin in June and hours are flexible. In most cases only one hour per week would be needed for a month or two.

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to call or email Jane Schnee at (772) 589-3201 or sunwrent@aol.com.
