Robotic glider at Harbor Branch

FAU/Harbor Branch engineer Ben Metzger, left, and electronics technician George LaBarca look inside a Bluefin Robotics’ Spray Glider. The buoyancy-driven autonomous underwater vehicle can collect data from depths up to 1,500 meters and transmit scientific information via antennas that look like wings on its sides. According to Metzger, the robotic glider has been traveling the open waters for less than a year and is performing well. “It allows us to monitor large areas for long periods of time,” Metzger said. “We get a lot of data from each trip.” Photo: Rick Wood.
