Carmen Mendez, 93, Vero Beach

Carmen Mendez, 93, died April 28, 2012, at The Place of Vero Beach.

She was born in Havana, Cuba, and lived in Vero Beach for seven years, coming from Miami.

Before retirement, she worked as a professor at the University of Nebraska, and then as a teacher at Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jacoby, of Vero Beach; son, Jorge Mendez, of Phoenix; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jose Mendez; and sons, Jose and Miguel Mendez.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SunUp ARC of Indian River County, 2455 S.W. Fifth St., Vero Beach, FL 32962.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. May 2 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Doral.

Arrangements are by Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.
