SEBASTIAN — Construction is well underway on the Four Chaplains Memorial next to the Veterans Memorial at Riverview Park in Sebastian and the pathway connecting the two is another step closer to getting started now that the Sebastian City Council has approved contracts for the bricks and the concrete on which they’ll sit.
City Manager Al Minner presented the contracts to the council last week, though the work came in well under budget. The council had originally set a $20,000 budget for the walkway project.
The bricks and concrete combined came in at a little over $12,000.
Island Pavers and Stone, of Vero Beach, was chosen from among three bidders, due to being the low bid at $7,240 to provide the brickwork.
Jack Reagan Concrete, which has an existing concrete services agreement with the city, will do the concrete foundation work for $4,860.
Minner told the council the work would be performed in two phases, the first being pouring the concrete foundation. The foundation would then be covered with the brick pavers, which would be locked into place with a sand-like substance.
Bricks will be “sold” by the Sebastian Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts initially for $35 a brick or three for $100 to be engraved as a memorial for veterans and loved ones.
Sold bricks will be removed from the walkway, engraved and reset into the path.
So far, the Four Chaplains Memorial’s reflection pool has been laid out, framed, and reinforced. Conduit for the pool has been installed.
Minner told the council that work on the memorial could be wrapped up by the Memorial Day celebration or the Fourth of July celebration at the latest.
