VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present the exhibition “Stephen Knapp: Lightpaintings” on view through Sunday, May 20.
The exhibition is free of charge for all visitors and is particularly delightful for parents and children to experience together. The exhibition, installed in the Museum’s Stark Gallery, showcases five of Knapp’s colorful and truly unique works of art.
Stephen Knapp creates his Lightpaintings by using special glass treated with metallic coatings that act as a selective prism, separating light into different frequencies of the spectrum.
He considers these to be the first new art medium of the 21st century, but also an extension of his long-term interests as an artist.
“I have been fascinated with light all my life, both for what it can do and for the effect it has on us”, Knapp explained recently.
After pursuing a successful career as a fine art photographer, he began experimenting with ways of reflecting light on various surfaces and refracting light into hues of great purity.
Knapp’s five Lightpaintings have transformed the gallery into a magical environment filled with glowing colors. “Lightpaintings challenge the traditional notions of perception that we get from painting and sculpture”, Knapp added.
By controlling color and how it is projected in space, he makes gallery walls seem to disappear. The largest of the Lightpaintings on view extends thirteen feet high and twenty-one feet in width along the longest gallery wall.
The exhibition, organized by the Vero Beach Museum of Art, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 1- 4:30 p.m.
The Vero Beach Museum of Art is located at 3001 Riverside Park Dr. in Riverside Park, Vero Beach.
