INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Beginning March 19, the speed limit on Interstate 95 from Exit 147 in Vero Beach south is lowered from 70 mph to 60 mph for the 7-mile-long construction corridor into St. Lucie County to Fort Pierce Exit 129.
The speed limit has been reduced for the safety of the traveling public as well as the construction workers in this area. Throughout the construction zone, motorists should be alert for slow moving construction vehicles entering and leaving the travel lanes.
To alert motorists of the change, variable message sign boards and orange cautionary signs with the new speed limit have been placed in advance of the construction zone. Also, regulatory speed limit signs are placed at one mile intervals within the construction zone.
On Jan. 3, the speed limit was lowered to 60 mph through the 13-mile-long construction corridor in northern St. Lucie County from Okeechobee Road (SR 70/Exit 129) at Fort Pierce to the St. Lucie/Indian River County Line. The lowered speed limit will be in effect until construction is completed in each segment:
- St. Lucie/Indian River County Line to State Road 60 (Exit 147) at Vero Beach is expected to be completed in early 2014;
- Indrio Road (SR 614/Exit 138) to the St. Lucie Indian River County line is expected to be completed in early 2013;
- Okeechobee Road (SR 70/Exit 129) at Fort Pierce to Indrio Road (SR 614/Exit 138) is expected to be completed in early 2015.
Work in each of these projects includes adding one lane on I-95 in each direction; removing old asphalt and resurfacing the existing lanes; bridge widening; bridge replacement; interchange ramp reconstruction; sound wall installation along residential areas; and landscaping, traffic signals and highway lighting improvements.
