Firefighters Fair closes early due to bad weather opening night

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Shortly after 8 p.m. Friday night, officials at the Indian River County Firefighters Fair closed the ticket booths and put a halt on the rides as severe weather appeared to be heading to the area.

An announcement was made at the end of the Mini Car Division of the Demolition Derby, sending many in the metal bleachers scattering to get in one last ride before the rains came.

Despite the rain throughout the day and threat of storms Friday evening, attendance opening night seemed strong.

Even as the ticket booths were closed, groups of people wound their way through the parking lot trying to get in. Vehicles were parked as far as the chain-link fence near 58th Avenue.

According to Weather.com, Saturday’s weather is expected to include scattered thunderstorms with a 40 percent chance of rain and a high of 77 degrees. Sunday and Monday, too, call for showers.

The weather is expected to clear out Tuesday and remain clear through next Saturday.

The Indian River County Firefighters Fair runs through Sunday, March 18 at the Indian River County Fairgrounds. For information about the fair, visit www.FirefightersFair.org.
