INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Florida Legislature has completed their task of redrawing new legislative and congressional district boundary lines. Final approval is expected in June. The newly proposed legislative and congressional districts bring some changes for Indian River County.
Indian River County will continue to have one congressional district. The plan also calls for a single district in the Florida House and two Florida Senate districts.
The redistricting process provides the Supervisor of Elections in each county the opportunity to draw new precinct boundary lines.
Supervisor of Elections, Leslie Rossway Swan, presented her proposed plan to trim the number of precincts in Indian River County from 54 precincts down to 36 precincts at the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting.
Counties all over the state of Florida are consolidating polling locations and precincts in order to reduce expenses.
Currently, Indian River County has 54 precincts. Swan’s plan is to reduce the number of precincts to 36. By reducing the number of precincts, Swan reduces the number of “ballot styles” associated with each precinct which reduces elections expenses. The new precincts will be numbered 1 through 36.
Once final approval is received from the Board of County Commissioners, each registered voter will receive a new voter information card prior to the Aug. 14 Primary Election.
The new voter information card will indicate the voter’s new precinct number, legislative and congressional district, county commissioner district, school board district and the voter’s polling location.
