Community Foundation elects new board officers

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Community Foundation Board of Directors launched the New Year with the election of officers at its annual meeting on Jan. 10.

Retired banking executive, Rebecca Allen was elected to a second term as chairman, a nod to the organization’s significant progress under her leadership, including growing from $5 million to more than $10 million in charitable assets under management. Scott Alexander, president of

Northern Trust, was also elected to a second term as secretary. Other new officers include Robert Puff, vice chairman; Ted Michael, treasurer; and Sam Block, at-large member.

The Indian River Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by local volunteers specifically interested in improving the community through donor-driven philanthropy. The majority of the $10 million in assets are held in donor-advised funds from which the fund holders recommend grants to any 501c (3) organization. During fiscal year 2011, donors suggested $4,527,710 in grants to 173 different nonprofits, of which 93 percent were in Indian River County.

The board said goodbye to two founding members: Richard McDermott, who served four years as chairman, and Ann Marie McCrystal who was one of the first to help establish the organization in 2004. Also leaving the board after finishing a three-year term was Susan Hopkins, who will continue to serve on the foundation’s Grants Committee.

The new officers will lead the 16-member board of directors, which is now comprised of Lois Appleby, Ben Bailey, Andrew Barton, Paul Becker, David Brown, Bill Frick, Kevin Given, Alma Lee Loy, Bob Morrison, Andrea Thurn and Buzz Wurzer.
