Ralph “Mac” McGovern, 90, Vero Beach

Ralph “Mac” McGovern, 90, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

Mac was born in Rochester, Minn., and came to Florida in 1984 from Michigan.

Before retiring he worked as a designer for Ford Motor Company.

McGovern was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He served on the USS Maryland during seven major battles of the Pacific Theater: Pearl Harbor, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Palau, Leyte, and Okinawa.

McGovern was a member of the Moose Lodge, the VFW and the American Legion in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife Claire; sons Michael and Marty; his daughters Elaine and Deborah, all of Michigan, and Lorie of Louisiana.

He was preceded in death by his son Patrick.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Fountainhead Funeral Home in Palm Bay.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

Burial will follow Friday at Fountainhead Memorial Park, Palm Bay.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society.
