Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation to host Memoir Writing Workshop Jan. 31

VERO BEACH – The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation, with a gift by the James and Joanne Mitchell Foundation, will host a Memoir Writing Workshop with Kevin McCarthy, PhD from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 31 at the Indian River County Main Library

Cost for the workshop is $60.

Who would be interested in my memories? What is the difference between memoir and autobiography? What makes a good structure for a memoir? How can I trigger memories? What role does genealogy play? Where should I go for supplemental facts?

Dr. Kevin McCarthy will answer these and other questions in a three-hour, one-day intensive workshop entitled “Memoir Writing: how to do it, how to produce it, and what to emphasize.”

This is an opportunity to finally turn that diary into a published piece or readable family record. Dr. McCarthy, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, has published numerous books, scores of articles, and has taught writing workshops around the world.

Dr. Kevin McCarthy earned his B.A. in American Literature from LaSalle College in 1963, his M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1966 and his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the same school in 1970. He taught in the Peace Corps in Turkey for two years, in Lebanon as a Fulbright Professor for one year, in Saudi Arabia as a Fulbright Professor for two years, and as a professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Florida for 33 years. He has had 51 books published, mostly about Florida, plus 43 articles in scholarly and popular journals and has given over 300 talks to schools and academic groups.

The mission of the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is to preserve and interpret the home of the late 20th Century Poet and to promote literary programs that nurture a passion for the written word.
