University of the South presentation to open Museum’s Distinguished Professor Series

VERO BEACH — Beginning its third decade in 2012, the Vero Beach Museum of Art Distinguished Professor Lecture Series, sponsored by The Frederick H. Leonhardt Foundation, provides some of the most distinguished colleges and universities in the U.S. with the opportunity to connect with their local Florida alumni by sharing recent scholarship with Museum members and the public.

On Wednesday Jan. 25, Mishoe Brennecke, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair of Art History of The University of the South (Sewanee) will present the lecture Vision on the Mountain: Johannes A. Oertel and the University of the South.

Between 1880 and his death in 1909, the German-American artist Johannes A. Oertel gave a sizeable collection of his works to the University of the South, including four monumental Biblical paintings he considered the most important productions of his career.

This lecture will explore the fascinating life of this little-known artist, self-proclaimed visionary and Episcopal priest, in particular his ties to the university, his brief residence in Sewanee, and the rich body of artistic works that he gave to the institution.

This season there are seven offerings in this celebrated academic lecture series. The topics are rich and diverse, highlighting current research in the arts and humanities. Alumni of featured schools enjoy the Museum member price for this series.

The cost for individual lecture tickets is $20 for the general public and $15 for Museum members and alumni. Each lecture takes place on a Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Museum’s Leonhardt Auditorium.
