Indian River Rowing Club and Youth Sailing Foundation seek land parcels

VERO BEACH — On Jan. 18, the Indian River Rowing Club, a 501 (3)c formed in 2008, will present with Youth Sailing Foundation, also a 501(3)c, for separate parcels of land in MacWilliam Park at 4 p.m. at City Hall. The clubs have been discussing their needs with the city planners and have also been asked to be neighbors. Both clubs have submitted letters of intent to the city for long term leases.

Charlie Pope and Shotsi Cain Lajoie have been representing Youth Sailing and the Indian River Rowing Club, respectively, for the past few months in planning meanings.

“I believe this will be great for the residents of Indian River County. Youth Sailing starts children at age 7 and goes through preadolescence and Rowing begins about 12-13 and can end as late as 90. We have a chance to add value to many, many people with our facilities,” says Shotsi Cain Lajoie.

In anticipation of a positive response, Indian River Rowing has begun its planning process for a capital campaign, expected to be close to 3 million dollars. At a recent board of directors meeting, the club invited Kerry Bartlett, executive director of the Indian River Community Foundation, to speak about philanthropy and inquire about the clubs’ needs. The club has opened its capital fundraising account for this possible project.

Indian River Rowing Club is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and teach the sport of rowing to the community, for the health, education and involvement of a team sport that benefits individuals and families.
