History of Indian River County to be focus of A Heritage Celebration

VERO BEACH — What do you know about the history of Indian River County? Come to the Heritage Center from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 to learn some well-known (and lesser known!) facts about our county.

Explore the history and the heritage of Indian River County by viewing the collections of vintage photos and postcards courtesy of B.T. Cooksey and George Hamner as well as Hammers’ incredible collection of citrus crate labels.

Immerse yourself in old Vero artifacts including information on the historic home owned by Chris Runge. Learn about the early history of Wabasso and Vero courtesy of Graves Brothers Company, check out the history of the Vero Beach Airport, find out how “Oslo Ridge” got its name and tour the Indian River Citrus Museum located in the Heritage Center.

Local authors Pam Cooper, Ellen Stanley, Rody Johnson, Bill Harp and Janie Gould will be present as well as Charlotte Terry with her audio “Cracker Tales.”

Representatives from Osceola Park and Original Town Neighborhood Associations, Indian River County Historical Society and the Indian River Genealogical Society will also be on hand and you can get information on the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.

Tickets for the event are $5 per person to benefit the Heritage Center and Citrus Museum, and may be purchased at the door. Admission is free if you become a NEW member of Vero Heritage that evening. Please have checks made payable to Vero Heritage, Inc.

Built in 1935 as the original Community Building, the Heritage Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a vital link to the history of our community.

Funds generated from this event assist in the preservation of this important landmark which continues to be a center of activity for the community, hosting numerous public and private events including weddings, meetings and dances as well as the Hibiscus Festival.

Event sponsors include Gould Cooksey Fennell, Ray Smith (LeRoy Smith & Sons), Oslo Citrus Growers Association, Bernard Egan Foundation, Graves Brothers Company, Janie Gould, Marilyn Wallach and Mary Jane Mitchell Stewart. Additional sponsor opportunities are available.
