Shooting in Gifford leads to person of interest in custody

GIFFORD — A person of interest is in custody following a shooting in the Gifford area overnight that left one woman dead and another critically injured, authorities said Thursday morning, in what might be a domestic violence incident.

Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jeff Luther said the shooting occurred outside the Orangewood Apartments on 42nd Lane around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The identities of the deceased and the injured have not yet been released, but Luther said the women, approximately 19 years old, may have known each other.

The woman injured in the shooting was flown to an trauma center for treatment. The extent of her injuries was not immediately known, though she is in critical condition.

The person of interest being interviewed identified himself to the Sheriff’s Office and told investigators he did not have anything to do with the shooting.

Authorities believe he might be the boyfriend or ex-boyfriend of the injured woman.
