SEBASTIAN — The Sebastian River Area Veterans of Foreign Wars All American Post 10210 is in the running for a $25,000 grant from Home Depot, but the organization needs the community’s support – and votes – to make it happen.

SEBASTIAN – The Sebastian River Area Veterans of Foreign Wars All American Post 10210 is in the running for a $25,000 grant from Home Depot, but the organization needs the community’s support – and votes – to make it happen.

Sebastian City Councilwoman Andrea Coy had no desire to join Facebook, but she did, just for the purpose of being able to vote.
“It’s such a worthy cause,” she said.
The Sebastian VFW is up against a couple giants, including an organization in Detroit, Mich., and another veterans group in Phoenix, Ariz. A fourth group is located in Oxnard, Calif.
If the local VFW were to receive the $25,000 grant from Home Depot, the organization would also be in the running for a $250,000 grand prize.
Commander Willis and the VFW Post know exactly what they would do with the $25,000, if they were to win it.
The organization, with help from Home Depot volunteers would create a motorcycle parking area, paint the interior of the building and replace missing ceiling tiles. The improvements would provide a safer parking area and create a more comfortable setting for group meetings.
The VFW has, in the past, received help from Team Depot, which came out and updated the exterior of the building, installed a 40-square-foot walkway to the war memorial monument on site, landscaped, and installed solar lighting along the walkway.
The purpose of the VFW is fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable, and educational. The organization is meant to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members and to assist worthy comrades, as well as to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their spouses and children.
The other organizations vying for Facebook votes, found at www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation, are Life Builders of Detroit, Lighthouse for Women and Children, of Oxnard, and U.S.VETS-Phoenix.
Life Builders of Detroit is a community organization that offers housing and a variety of social programs to those in most need in Detroit. Its plans for the $25,000 include renovating the multi-purpose room that serves as a classroom, meeting hall, dining hall, and chapel. Volunteers would also update the kitchen and do additional landscaping.
Lighthouse for Women and Children provides food, shelter and clothing to women and children in need. Its proposed project would include installing raised garden beds, updating the kitchen, and renovating additional rooms.
U.S.VETS – Phoenix provides affordable housing for veterans. The organization plans to build a full community kitchen in the main administration area. Volunteers would also like to install a fence around the entire property to provide privacy and security.

Log into your Facebook account and visit www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation. Select which of the four organizations you wish to vote for, and click “Vote.”
Voters can vote every day, once in a 24-hour period, through Noon Dec. 30.
Currently the Detroit organization is winning with more than 1,500 votes, followed by the California organization with 1,300 votes.
