Escaped murderer found with drugs when returned to jail

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Escaped and recaptured convicted murderer Leviticus Taylor was found with drugs in his shoe when he was booking back into the Indian River County Jail in October, authorities released Friday.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, when Taylor was returned to the jail on Oct. 24 and searched prior to booking, a small, flattened bag of marijuana that had been in his shoe.

“Man, I forgot I had that,” Taylor said when he saw the baggy, according to the arrest report.

Another deputy discovered a larger bag containing marijuana on the ground in front of the booking area counter, the report states.

According to authorities, all inmates in the booking area were secured into holding cells prior to Taylor being brought in due to his high profile. Inmates were not brought back into the booking area until after Taylor was processed.

In all, authorities say Taylor brought 4.7 grams of marijuana into the jail. Taylor faces a new charge of introducing contraband into a detention facility. The charge is in addition to the felony escape charge he incurred after his escape on Oct. 24.
