1 cyclist dead, another transported in hit-run crash in south Vero

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities have confirmed that a cyclist was killed and another injured during a hit-and-run Saturday night in southern Vero Beach. Investigators are searching for a black, late model 2007-2010 Toyota Camry or Solara.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two bicyclists were traveling east on 1st Street SW on the south paved apron of the road when the driver of the Toyota, also traveling east, left the lane and collided with the cyclists.

Both cyclists were ejected from their bicycles, landing on the grassy shoulder of the road. The vehicle did not stop and left the scene of the crash, according to FHP.

One cyclist died at the scene. The other, 25-year-old Ismael Escamilla, was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Authorities have not released the identity of the cyclist who died, only releasing the cyclist was a 38-year-old male.
