SEBASTIAN – Sebastian resident Jane Schnee recently purchased 10-acres of land in Sebastian so that it might remain home to a number of Florida Scrub-Jays that reside there. In an effort to help the Scrub-Jays, Pelican Island Audubon and Schnee would like to offer to people free sand pine trees that are currently on the property. These type of trees were used years ago by Florida settlers as Christmas trees and we would like to offer the public the same opportunity.
Volunteers from Pelican Island Audubon and from the US Fish and Wildlife Service will be available at Jane’s scrub on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, on Saturday, Dec. 3, and on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
They will cut the sand pine of your choice for you for free, though a $20 donation to PIAS would be appreciated. Donations will be used to restore and maintain Jane’s scrub for scrub jay habitat and includes a one year Pelican Island Audubon membership.
The location is about ½ mile west of US Highway 1 on Barber Street in Sebastian, across from the Park Place subdivision.
