INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — In November 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone swept the box office, the Arizona Diamondbacks won their first World Series, and in Vero Beach the former McKee Jungle Gardens re-opened on US1 as McKee Botanical Garden.
In celebration of this historic milestone, the Garden will host a 10th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring rollback admission of $1 for all visitors.
“McKee today is very different from its days as a jungle garden, but that history is still a large part of what we have achieved over the last 10 years,” explains Executive Director Christine Hobart. “We want the entire community to come and enjoy the McKee Botanical Garden of today, and are offering a historically low admission price.”
Attractions at the 10th Anniversary Celebration will include live music, Gospel singers, a stilt-walker, a rare Florida Cracker horse and calf provided by Forever Florida, a troupe of performing cockatiels, as well as hand-picked local food and craft vendors.
Visitors also will enjoy several historic activities designed to recognize the Garden’s anniversary, including the performance of a one-act play featuring Garden founders Waldo Sexton and Arthur McKee; a pictorial display showcasing the restoration of McKee’s historic Hall of Giants building; and the chance to contribute to a commemorative 10th anniversary mural.
Admission during the five-hour event is only $1 per person.
