INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Rondell Reed, the 52-year-old murder suspect who escaped from the county jail Monday morning has been captured, authorities said Saturday.
He was arrested in Warren County, Ohio, just outside Cincinnati around 7 a.m Saturday, following a chase and a crash on Interstate 75.
Reed sustained minor injuries, Sheriff Deryl Loar said, and no law enforcement officers were reported injured.
“It’s a great day in Indian River County,” Sheriff Loar said, giving credit to all the various law enforcement agencies nationwide that helped capture Reed.
Reed’s charges in Ohio include failure to comply with an order from law enforcement, receiving stolen property, carrying concealed weapons, and possessing weapons under disability.
Reed was caught in a vehicle reported stolen out of Georgia. Authorities have not yet recovered the Dodge Ram pickup truck they believe he stole earlier in the week from a business in Sebastian.
Authorities believe Reed may have been trying to get to Richmond, Ind., where he has family. It is the same area where he was caught earlier this year after fleeing from the scene of a murder.
Sheriff Loar said investigators in Ohio are questioning Reed and two detectives from Indian River County, Det. Steven Stoll and Det. Milo Thornton will be leaving today for Ohio to question the escapee.
Though Sheriff Loar said he expects Reed to be returned to Indian River County “soon,” Reed could fight extridition, making it longer before he returns.
The sheriff said the jail has continued to be “hardened” to prevent further escapes from the facility in the wake of Monday’s jailbreak.
“This incident will not happen again” under his watch, Sheriff Loar said.
Once Reed returns to the Indian River County Jail, Sheriff Loar said Reed would be placed in solitary confinement under close supervision, as has already been done with fellow escapee Leviticus Taylor.
Taylor was recaptured Monday evening.
