“Super Heroes” to “join forces” to support American Cancer Society

SEBASTIAN — The American Cancer Society invites individuals who want to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to join its North Indian River County Relay For Life, scheduled for April 20-21, 2012, at Sharks Stadium, Sebastian River High School.

In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000. This year, Relay For Life will take place in more than 6,500 communities.

At this year’s Kick-off Party for the North Indian River County Relay For Life chapter will be serving a free plate dinner of BBQ, along with a side of coleslaw and baked beans. The event will be held Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at LaPorte Farms, 7700 129th St., in Sebastian.

Admission is free and the event is open to all residents, big and small, of Indian River County.

The Pink Fire Truck, supporting Breast Cancer, will be on site for this event. Luminaries will be available to purchase, set by your own donation amount.

The theme for this year’s event is “Super Heroes: How We Join Forces To Take Down Cancer.” Please feel free to wear “Super Hero” attire to this event.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds, while celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against a disease that takes too much.

At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaries’ around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
