INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two distinguished alumni were inducted into the St. Ed’s Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony preceding the kickoff of the Pirates homecoming game Friday night against St. John Lutheran School. The visiting team won 41-0.
Director of Athletics Jeff Lamscha and Head of School Mike Mersky emceed the festivities. Following a picnic-style barbecue on a gorgeous autumn afternoon, Mike Lockwood ’79 and Danny Colontrelle ’98 were honored before about 200 past and present members of the St. Ed’s community.
The stands were packed moments later to see Calib Alexander run wild for the visiting Saints. The senior running back was a one-man gang. He scored four touchdowns, finishing with 245 yards on 26 carries in a 41-0 rout of the Pirates.
The loss dropped St. Ed’s to 1-5 in an injury plagued season.
Homecoming Queen Leyla Tettamanti and her court were presented to the crowd at halftime. The evening concluded with a fireworks display after the game.
Lockwood and Colontrelle joined seven others from the inaugural Hall of Fame Class of 2010. They were selected by committee not only for their exceptional contributions as players and coaches to the athletic programs at St. Ed’s, but also for the outstanding leadership and character traits they continued to exhibit after graduation.
“We set up the Hall of Fame for two reasons,” Lamscha said. “It’s a good way for us to stay connected with our alumni, to bring them back into the fold. But we also wanted to recognize our past athletes for their effort, dedication and commitment. They raised the bar for all of our athletic programs and our current students-athletes can see and appreciate where we came from.”
Colontrelle captained the varsity football, basketball and lacrosse teams in his senior year at St. Ed’s. He also squeezed in some varsity baseball. He signed to play football at West Point and graduated from the USMA in 2002.
Captain Colontrelle earned a Bronze Star while serving with the 82nd Field Artillery Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom II. He works in the family business and lives in Vero with his wife Shelley and son Dylan.
“It’s an honor to be recognized,” Colontrelle told us just before his induction. “This school set me up on a path for success and allowed me not only to play sports, but to get a great education that has been so useful for me later in life.”
Lockwood excelled in varsity football, baseball and soccer at St. Ed’s before going on to play Division 1 soccer at Davidson College. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, then came back to his high school alma mater to teach algebra and coach soccer and football.
He coached his brother Darin on the 1989 state final four soccer team and saw his son Austin graduate in 2007. Lockwood currently works in the information technology field and lives in Vero with his wife, Deb.
“It’s quite an honor,” Lockwood said. “I got the invitation a week after I turned 50 and it made me melt. It put me right back on the football field.” So we asked Mike if he would like to suit up. “I’d love to be out there for sure,” was his response.
Coach Bill Motta could have used him. His team was simply overmatched.
“They were a better team than we were,” Motta concluded. “We got pushed around a little bit. No excuses there. We go back to work tomorrow morning and put the best product we can on the field.”
The Pirates will host Florida Air Academy next Thursday night.
