VERO BEACH — The large, faded hibiscus mural that runs along 20th Street at Commerce Avenue will soon be replaced, with more hibiscus flowers, the Vero Beach City Council has decided. The Vero Beach Art Club presented a few options for the mural Tuesday evening.
Councilman Brian Heady, who had originally pushed for the mural to be repainted, said of the magnolias, reef and hibiscus options presented, he preferred the hibiscus.
“This is the hibiscus city,” Heady said.
Heady said he was there, helping to paint the original mural so many years ago alongside many from the community.
“We’re going to have a great time,” said Vero Beach Art Club mural project coordinator Karen Leffel-Massengill, adding that if any of the council members were to show up, they might be put to work.
The wall stands approximately five feet high and is nearly 240 feet long.
“Obviously, we’re going to have to do a lot of artwork,” Leffel-Massengill said.
“We want to make it fun,” she added. “And, hopefully, not cause any accidents.”
The Vero Beach Art Club is seeking volunteers to help paint the mural, which is expected to get started in a couple weeks. The club, too, is looking for donations to help offset the cost of the paint.
Anyone interested in helping the Vero Beach Art Club repaint the mural is encouraged to contact the club by calling (772) 231-0303.
