County Commission supports a YES vote on Vero Beach utility referendum

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The County Commission today unanimously passed a resolution urging a yes vote in the upcoming Vero Beach referendum that will determine whether the city can lease out the land where its power plant is located.

“I am all for moving the process forward,” said Commissioner Peter O’Bryan.

Florida Power and Light is negotiating with city to buy its electric utility, including the big blue power plant, but the proposed deal does not include the land the power plant sits on.

Though the referendum does not address the utility sale directly, it has become a stalking horse for the contentious issue.

Amy Brunjes, Florida Power and Light External Affairs Manager, said at the commission meeting that the company would have to “seriously reevaluate” its interest in buying the utility if the referendum were to fail.
