Weekend Winners: Things to do in Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — From the kick off to the Halloween season with the Sebastian River Junior Woman’s Club haunted house and a battle of the marching bands with the Crown Jewel Festival to a beachside half-marathon and a walk to battle breast cancer, there is far too much to do this weekend to get to everything – but don’t let that stop you from trying.

  • Intrepid Art Gallery Golden Seeds exhibition of works by Venezuelan sculptor Carolina Rojas.
  • Gallery 14 presents It’s Time to “UNWINED” – Watercolors by Colleen Nash Becht.
  • Artists Guild Gallery features European Doorways exhibition of works by Judy Burgarella.

Thursday

  • Members of the community are invited to a Youth Guidance Open House event at their administrative office from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. to learn about the organizations goal of enriching the lives of children in need in Indian River County through quality mentoring relationships.
  • Present your server with a special flyer from 4 – 11 p.m. and Chili’s Restaurant will donate 10 percent of all proceeds to the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County. Flyers are available at the Humane Society shelter, thrift shops, mall location and website, www.hsvb.org.
  • Get a “red carpet” tour of the Gifford Youth Activity Center at an Open House from 6 to 7 p.m. and learn about GYAC’s history and the great things happening in the After School Program. Everyone is invited to enjoy an Ice Cream Social immediately following the Open House.

Friday

  • Beachside retail shops will donate a percentage of proceeds all day to the American Cancer Society Making Strides for a Cure campaign during the Oceanside Business Association Shop for a Cure.
  • Dollars for Scholars Football Classic, between Vero Beach and Sebastian High School teams, held this year at SRHS Shark Stadium – 5:30 p.m. VIP BBQ dinner, followed by game at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sip of the City happy hour features A Tour of Italy at Mimmo’s Scampi Grill, 5 to 6:30 p.m. sponsored by Main Street Vero Beach
  • The Samaritan Center’s ‘Chicken Soup for the Potter’s Soul’ Soup Tureen Show at Tiger Lily Art Studios and Gallery opens; exhibition runs through Nov. 4
  • Members of the Mad Potter’s Association and the Cultural Council will exhibit their ceramic artwork in a show titled “Arresting Art at the Courthouse” at the Indian River County Courthouse beginning Friday. Courthouse hours are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Third Annual Beachside Half Marathon and 10K Run to benefit Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition, 6:30 a.m. race, with Health & Fitness Expo from 7:30 a.m. to Noon, all at Riverside Park.
  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, 7:30 a.m. registration; 8:30 walk at Sebastian River Medical Center.
  • About Boating Safe eight-hour program, 8 a.m. at the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 58 in Fort Pierce.
  • Find unique treasures at the Unity of Vero Beach Outreach Ministry’s monthly Arts & Crafts Fairs, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Unity Center in Vero Beach.
  • Farmer’s Market Oceanside, 8 a.m. to Noon at the corner of Ocean Drive and Dahlia Lane, across from Humiston Park in Vero Beach.
  • Join H.A.L.O. Rescue and Petco from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to celebrate their third year of partnership, with over three hundred cat and kitten adoptions. Beautiful cats and kittens of all ages and personalities are ready for forever homes.
  • Tate Music Group artist M.J. Wicker will be at Wings of Joy Christian Marketplace in Vero Beach from 1-3 p.m. to sign copies of his album, He Lives in You.
  • John Sandford presents “Shock Wave: A Virgil Flowers Novel,” 3 p.m. at the Vero Beach Book Center.
  • Vero Beach High School hosts 30th Annual Crown Jewel Marching Band Festival at the Citrus Bowl. Competition begins at 10 a.m.; finals at 6:30 p.m.
  • Pointe West and the Indian River County Recreation Department host the Season Premier of Screen on the Green, 7 p.m. featuring the animated adventure, “Monsters vs. Aliens.”
  • Scarecrows in the Garden at McKee Botanical Garden opens Saturday and runs through Oct. 31. Normal hours and admission rates apply.

Sunday

  • Main Street Vero Beach Sunday (Farmers) Market located at the corner of 14th Avenue & 21st Street is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sunburst Star Search welcomes aspiring actresses, singers and models to show off their stuff for the chance to be scouted by some of the top recruiters in the country with auditions at 12:30 p.m. at the Indian River Mall.
  • The fall Treasure Coast Bridal Expo and Fashion Show is scheduled, from 1-4 p.m. at the Heritage Center and Courthouse Executive Center. The Bridal Expo takes place from 1-3 p.m. at the Heritage Center, immediately followed by the Fashion Show which will be held across the street at the Courthouse Executive Center.
  • GFWC Treasure Coast Women’s 16th Annual Italian Dinner Fundraiser, 4-7 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge.
  • The Vero Beach Theatre Guild will be casting 15 performers in its January production of the comedy “Born Yesterday.” Auditions are set for 7 p.m. on Sunday and Monday at the theatre at 2020 San Juan Ave.
