INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A tour of the Winter Beach Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Indian River County, is on tap for Friday Oct. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. The tour is presented by the Indian River County Historical Society.
It is the first in the Society’s “Telling Tales” series of programs for the 2011-2012 season.
Located on the Atlantic Coastal Ridge a few miles west of the Indian River Lagoon, the cemetery was established in the 1890s to serve the small community of Woodley – later renamed Quay and, finally, Winter Beach. The cemetery, which is still in use, contains many graves of historical interest, including that of noted poet Laura Riding Jackson. In addition to the tour of the cemetery, the program will also feature a local storyteller or two, along with refreshments.
Tickets for the Winter Beach tour are $15 for Society members and $20 for nonmembers. They are available at the Historical Society office in the Vero Train Station at 2336 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach.
Other programs in the 2011-2012 series include a film and tour program on Pelican Island in January, a film and tour program in the St. John’s River in March, and a program on the work force at the Hallstrom Farmstead in April.
