Spectacular tennis events coming up to benefit Youth Guidance

VERO BEACH — Mark your calendars for two spectacular tennis events to be played at The Boulevard Tennis Village and Club this November 2011 and January/February 2012, both benefiting the Youth Guidance Mentoring & Activities Program.

The first tournament to be played is the “Master” of the King of the Hill (MKOTH), a three-week tournament held on Friday evenings, Nov. 4, 11 and 18. This event provides a unique opportunity for the winners of the previous sixteen years King of the Hill tournaments to play for the title of “Master” of the King of the Hill.

The Senior Division begins at 5 pm and the Open Division begins at 6:30 pm. Both Divisions are played in an eight player format. Tennis professionals (U.S.P.T.A.) come from Indian River and surrounding counties to compete for the coveted “Master” title.

Last year’s winners were Michael Phelipa from the Kiwi Club of Melbourne for the Senior Division and Ben Cox from Orchid Island for the Open Division.

The second tournament is the King of the Hill (KOTH), a six-week tournament played on Thursday evenings at 6 pm, Jan. 19 through Feb. 23. This event gives tennis fans the opportunity to enjoy high level doubles competition while providing the tennis professionals the opportunity to participate in the festivities and enjoy the spirit of competition.

Last year’s Open Division winner was Robert Kowalczyk of Sebastian. Tom Roine of Monarch Country Club won the Senior Division.

Since its inception, this fundraiser has raised over $175,000 for this unique and life changing youth program. Last year’s net proceeds were $25,000. Our goal this year is $30,000! The proceeds from these events provide mentoring and monthly recreational, educational and cultural activities as well as summer camp for more than 700 at- risk youth. All Youth Guidance children come from low income single parent households in IRC and many have been abused or neglected.

Youth Guidance is seeking sponsors, who will get a chance to meet the players at an Exclusive Sponsor/Player Cocktail Party being held at The Boulevard Village and Tennis Club on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
