VERO BEACH — Five outstanding feature films by legendary French film director, screenwriter, and producer Louis Malle will be shown at the Vero Beach Museum of Art beginning Tuesday, Oct. 4. They will be screened Tuesdays at 1:30 and 7 pm through Nov. 1 as part of a new Museum film studies course titled The World of Louis Malle: The French Films.
By the age of 25, Louis Malle was already one of France’s most successful and famous filmmakers. A pioneer of the French New Wave, he went on to create a body of work noted for its great breadth and variety, consciously avoiding the temptation to repeat himself. His films tended to be very personal, yet they shed light on an entire generation and opened doors in French consciousness that had been considered shut tight forever. His is one of international cinema’s great legacies.
Films featured during this first course of the new season will be Elevator to the Gallows, The Lovers, The Thief of Paris, Lacombe, Lucien, and Au Revoir, Les Enfants. All these films will be screened in their original French with English subtitles.
Film studies courses have become a highlight of the Museum’s education program since their beginning in 1999. They provide the opportunity to view and discuss outstanding motion pictures that are seldom shown on the Treasure Coast. Each weekly film is put into context by the Museum’s Film Coordinator Warren Obluck. After the film, he moderates an optional discussion.
Tuition for the five-week course is $60 ($50 for Museum members).
Students may register in-person at the Museum, on-line at www.verobeachmuseum.org, or by phone with Museum Art School Registrar Ellyn Giordano at (772) 231-0707 ext. 116.
