Barbara Jones Stark, Vero Beach

Barbara Jones Stark died on Sept. 12, 2011, at Hospice House in Vero Beach after a long illness.

She was born in Indianapolis in 1923.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at DePauw University and a master’s degree in education at Long Island University.

She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1944, she married Richard (Dick) A. Stark and became a Navy wife for two years.

Following World War II, Barbara and Dick moved to Long Island, N.Y., where they lived mostly in Garden City and Centre Island- Oyster Bay for 42 years.

In 1990, they retired to live full- time in Vero Beach.

She started two nursery schools and served as a grief counselor at Community Church in Garden City and at Community Church of Vero Beach.

In the early 1980s in Vero Beach, Stark was active in the founding, funding and operations of the (now) Vero Beach Museum of Arts.

She served a term as chairman of the Museum’s Community Committee (now Friends).

She was active in the Community Church of Vero Beach, where she and Dick were members for some 25 years.

Stark enjoyed worldwide travel, bridge as a Life Master, and extensive charitable activities, including her service at the Museum and at the Riverside Theatre.

She was passionate about women’s rights and, at various times, was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Planned Parenthood in Garden City and in Vero Beach.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Richard A. Stark, and their five children; Susan S. Woglom, Esq., of Amherst, Mass., Margaret L. Stark, CPA, of Westlake Village, Calif., Sarah S. Oldham, Esq., of Westport, Conn., Barbara S. Baxter, M.D., of Dallas, Texas, and Richard J. Stark, Esq., of New York, N.Y.; her siblings, Frederick Irving Jones, Jr., of Naples and Carolyn Jones Cole, Lakeland; and 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the Community Church of Vero Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach or Community Church of Vero Beach.
