VERO BEACH — This summer the Republican Women of Indian River purchased 30 new flags so that every pole on the 17th St. Bridge and the Barber Bridge would proudly display two flags.
Replacing the flags over the years is just one part of a community outreach effort, both locally and worldwide.
Each month RWIR sends packages to U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently, the group sent five boxes of school supplies to soldiers who are helping to rebuild a girls’ school in Afghanistan that was destroyed by the Taliban.
Those donations are for the children who attend the school. Recently, RWIR members had a request for golf balls. Within a matter of several days hundreds of golf balls were shipped to soldiers who use them during their recreation time.
At Christmas, the membership supports the families of soldiers at Fort Campbell, Ky., by providing gifts to military children.
On the local scene, RWIR members volunteer and support the National Navy Seal Museum located on North Hutchinson Island. Each year, RWIR awards three $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school students headed to college.
The group also provides networking/mentor support and financial assistance to local Young Republicans.
In addition, RWIR hosts a yearly Valentine’s Day party for the residents of St. Francis Manor.
And, in the spirit of community and patriotism, members proudly participated in the July 4th parade in Sebastian and were honored to carry the American flag.
The one thing RWIR can promise is that their 60 years of service locally and worldwide will continue.
