VERO BEAACH — It’s never too early to start to plan for college, and students in the seventh grade and beyond have an opportunity to do just that at the next free presentation offered by Connected 4 Kids Coalition of Indian River County (C4K) to be held on Monday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Vero Beach High School, 1707 16th Street. A free pizza dinner is provided from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and childcare is also provided at no charge for the first 50 healthy children 4-11 years of age.
There will be several presenters including:
Robin Blank from the Florida Department of Education Office of Student Financial Assistance who will present how to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Florida State Grants & Scholarships including the Florida Bright Futures scholarship, and searching for scholarships;
Camilla Wainwright will share information about the local Dollars for Scholars program;
Lisa Ruiz will talk about the Take Stock in Kids Scholarship Program, which is designed for eighth graders;
Holly Macias, Enrollment Specialist from Indian River State College will provide specific program and career information and provide guidance in the application process to IRSC;
Pam Proctor, author of The College Hook: Packaging Yourself to Win the College Admissions Game, will offer tips for making college a reality, including finding a college admission strategy, preparing for the PSAT, choosing colleges that need you and finding your “hook” so your application stands out from the pack.
The workshop is the third in a series of five being offered by C4K. They are offered free of charge and include childcare and dinner.
Future workshops include: a Literacy Series offered on October 6, 11, 20 & 27; and Building an Emotionally Healthy Home on November 17.
All of the workshops are open to the general public. RSVPs are requested so that adequate food and childcare services can be provided.
C4K is a coalition whose mission is to connect organizations, information, resources and families to one another to benefit children. With over 300 members from throughout Indian River County including schools, nonprofits and faith-based organizations, they produce an annual directory of resources and programs, and hold monthly meetings.
