Elva May Friberg, 97, Vero Beach

Elva May Friberg, 97, of Vero Beach, died August 26, 2011.

She was born in Maysville, Maine in 1914, the daughter of Sarah Calhoun Bruce and Charles W. Bruce.

She was a 1932 graduate of South Portland High School and a graduate of Shaw’s Business College and the Leighton Hospital, school of nursing.

While employed by Dr. Myron Ladd as a medical secretary, she met and fell in love with a recent osteopathic physician practicing in Bridgton, Maine, Dr. Harry E. Friberg.

Friberg and Harry and family moved to South Portland into the home Friberg designed and her father built at 216 Cottage Road.

She shared all outdoor activities with her family including deer hunting, bear hunting, pheasant hunting, fishing and camping. Real lobster bakes in their cove was their specialty.

She worked to raise money for the creation of the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine and she worked into her 80’s helping her daughter, Martha and her partner JoAgnes, at Cherished Possessions.

She was a 9-hole champion and member of both the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth and the Vista Royale Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Harry E. Friberg, her sister Helen Roast and her grand-daughter, Kirsten J. Friberg.

Survivors include her brother, Bernard J. Bruce, of Cape Elizabeth; sons Richard B. Friberg and his companion, Sheila Daniel, of Grants Pass, Oregon and Harry Robert Friberg and his wife, Dawn; her daughter, Dr. Martha L. Friberg; three grand- children; and two great- granddaughters.

Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth.

Services will be private.
