Richard F. Hornchek, 75, Vero Beach

Richard F. Hornchek, 75, died Aug. 26, 2011, at Indian River Medical Center.

He was born in Trenton, N.J., and lived in Vero Beach for 18 years, coming from his birthplace.

He was teacher of the year in New Jersey, where he spent his teaching career at Ewing High School as an industrial arts teacher.

He was a lieutenant in the New Jersey Army National Guard, 4th Battalion and 112th Field Artillery.

He was an active member of the Lakewood Park Methodist Church, serving on committees.

He was a graduate of Trenton State Teachers College and Wayne State University, where he received a master’s degree in industrial arts.

He also attended Howard University in preparation to become a member of the first group of Peace Corps volunteers.

He served in Cyprus for the Peace Corps from 1962 to 1964.

Survivors include his brother, David P. Hornchek, of Fairless Hill, Pa.; and sister, Alice Skimmons, of Surf City, N.J.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Park United Methodist Church, 5405 Turnpike Feeder Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34951.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Buklad Memorial Home, Trenton, N.J.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 2 at Buklad Memorial Home with the Rev. Michael W. Goldberg, St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, Vero Beach, officiating.

Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Trenton.
