INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An apparent fight between father and son at a home in the Vero Lake Estates community turned fatal over the weekend when shots were fired, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 20, a deputy arrived on scene to a home at the 7700 block of 101st Ave. and reported hearing shots fired from inside the home.
Backup arrived and deputies found 21-year-old Zackary Mann lying on the living room floor bleeding from visible gunshot wounds. Mann was flown to Holmes Regional Hospital’s trauma center. He was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Mann and his father were arguing, which escalated when Mann began beating his father. The Sheriff’s Office noted that Mann may have been extremely intoxicated during the altercation.
A juvenile in the home, who has not been identified, retrieved a handgun from another room and shot Mann, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing the active investigation and expects to release more information as it becomes available.
