The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is urging pet owners to have a disaster plan in place for themselves and their pets and to never leave animals unattended during hurricanes or other natural disasters.
Indian River County pet owners are asked to contact The Humane Society of Vero Beach and IRC at (772) 388-3331 ext. 10 to register for the Liberty Magnet Pet-Friendly Shelter if no other sheltering option is available. The Humane Society also has the following free materials available to help with emergency preparations:
If You Go, They Go! Disaster Planning for Pet Owners: This free brochure ondisaster planning for individuals and families with pets. The brochure covers topics including pet identification, determining if you and your pets live in a surge zone, pet supplies needed if you must evacuate with your animals and how to create a pet first aid kit. The information contained in the brochure is also available on the shelter’s website, www.hsvb.org/emergency.asp.
Pet ID Tags: Indian River County residents can receive free pet ID tags engraved with a unique ID number for each pet as well as the shelter’s 24-hour paging service. Each tag is also inscribed with the sentence “I AM LOST” to ensure that whoever finds the animal can immediately call the shelter.
Emergency! Please Save Our Pets! Window Stickers: These stickers have been created by the Humane Society to be used to alert rescuers of pets inside the home.
