First of the season – Hurricane Irene has Florida in its path

All of Florida is within the projected path for Hurricane Irene, currently a Category 1 storm. Irene is the first hurricane of the 2011 season.

The storm is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours and could reach the southernmost tip of Florida overnight Thursday.

Whether Irene will head up the east coast or west coast of Florida remains uncertain as forecasters predict the path will depend on a break or weakness in a subtropical ridge that develops over the state.

Some models show the storm staying well east of Florida, while others take the storm west of the state.

No Tropical Storm warnings have been issued for Florida at this time.

Hurricane Irene is on a west-northwest track traveling 14 mph. This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple days.

Irene is moving away from the north coast of Puerto Rico this morning and approaching the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, which it should reach by this afternoon or evening.
