Margaret Alice Monahan Whitmore, 89, Vero Beach

Margaret Alice Monahan Whitmore, 89, of Vero Beach, died after a brief illness on Aug. 10, 2011, at VNA Hospice House.

She was born Nov. 4, 1921 in Ansonia, Conn.

She raised her family in Morris Plains, N.J., where she resided for 40 years prior to moving to Vero Beach 26 years ago.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, J. Robert Whitmore; her four children; James R Whitmore and his wife Doreen, of Hackettstown, N.J.; Kathleen Modrow and her husband Douglas, of Newton, N.J.; Michael W Whitmore and his wife Vicki, of Vonore, Tenn.; and John F Whitmore and his wife Marilyn, of Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and five step great grandchildren; and her brother in law Rev Msgr Paul E Whitmore, of Watertown, N.Y.

Whitmore was predeceased by her parents Alice and Grover Monahan, her sisters Noreen, Cathleen and Barry and a granddaughter Deborah Modrow Snook.

She graduated from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.

She taught at St. Virgil School in Morris Plains and was active in bowling, bridge and golf in N.J.

In Vero Beach she remained active in bridge and golf at Vista Royale and Forest Park and she enjoyed dining and dancing at the Vero Beach Yacht Club.

She was a parishioner at St. Helen Church.

Visitation will be held from 5- 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at Saint Helen Catholic Church followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory of Vero Beach.
