One killed when vehicle blows tire on I-95

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Belle Glade woman was killed after being ejected from a vehicle when the vehicle’s tire blew out on Interstate 95 in Indian River County, officials said.

Elizabeth Joseph, 53, of Belle Glade, was ejected from the 1991 Mitsubishi Montero she and three others, all from Belle Glade, were riding in. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The other two passengers received minor injuries while the driver, Joseph Edras, 55, sustained serious injuries.

It is not clear in the Florida Highway Patrol’s report whether anyone in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

The vehicle was just north of State Road 60 Friday around 8:15 p.m. when the passenger side rear tire tread separated the tire deflated, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

After traveling a short distance, the vehcile began to rotate counter-clockwise, left the roadway

to the northwest, and traveled into the grassy median where it began to overturn multiple times. The vehicle finally came to a stop facing south near the southbound lanes.

Charges are pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
