Happy Birthday, USA!

What are you doing on the 4th? It’s a good bet that many of you who live in Indian River County will head up (or over) to Sebastian for Monday’s Big -parade and day-long celebration at Riverview Park.

It’s a long-time July tradition and always a lot of family fun. Indian River Habitat will, again, be represented in the parade: look for a cute little playhouse all done up in red, white and blue and carrying some of our homebuyers.

We’ll have staffers handing out candy, and our mascot, Hamilton the Hammer, will greet the crowd from the back of the float-pulling pick-up.

So – WAVE to us, OK?

Indian River Habitat is a dedicated supporter of our homeowner kids, for many, many great reasons.

Through success in school, pursuit of higher education and a developed sense of community responsibility and goal-setting, these young people can gain success in their chosen endeavors and, as a result, the cycle of poverty and second-generation Habitat homeownership can be ended. With Indian River Habitat, one of the ways in which kids can help their families meet the challenging homeownership requirements involves Sweat Equity.

For every A the child earns on her or his report card, one Sweat Equity hour is credited. This not only helps the family meet an important requirement, but also gives the child a sense of pride and accomplishment and helps develop good study habits.

One of these young students is Ashanti Smith, 9, who recently helped her homebuyer mom, Martha Robertson, by bringing home a Straight A report card.

Way to Go, Ashanti! Shine On!!
