Humane Society has no shortage of summer programs for kids

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – From pet first aid and nature walks to photography, creating cat toys and learning dog-bite safety, there are a dozen programs designed for children at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County over the summer.

Each class costs either $10 or $15 and the first one starts June 27. The classes are designed for children between 8 and 11 years old.  

June 27: 9 a.m.-Noon – Pet First Aid and CPR ($15 per class) – Children will learn pet first aid and CPR basics using animal mannequins. Children will receive a pet first aid booklet and a certificate of accomplishment.

June 28: 9 a.m.-Noon – Walk on the Wild Side ($15) – Children learn about Florida’s native wildlife, meet some animals and will participate in games and crafts highlighting wildlife.

June 29: 9 a.m. – Noon – Learning About Birds ($15) – Children will learn about wild and companion birds and do bird-themed activities including decorating their own birdfeeders or houses.

June 30: 9 a.m. – Noon – Pet Photography ($15 per class) – Children will photograph shelter animals and decorate a frame for their best photo. Program includes instruction, one print and photo frame.

July 11 and July 21: 9 a.m.-Noon – Pet Photography ($15 per class) – Children will photograph shelter animals and decorate a frame for their best photo. Program includes instruction, one print and photo frame.

June 27 and July 12: 9 a.m.-Noon – Pet First Aid and CPR ($15 per class) – Children will learn pet first aid and CPR basics using mannequins, receive a pet first aid booklet and a certificate.

July 13: 9 a.m.-Noon – Crafty Cats ($10) – Children will learn cat care basics and create cat toys for shelter cats.

July 14 and July 19: 9 a.m.-Noon – Dog Talk ($10 per class) – Children will learn basic dog body language, safety skills when around dogs to prevent bites and participate in dog-themed games and crafts.

July 15: 9 a.m.-Noon – Veterinary Basics ($15) – Designed for children who love helping animals, this program teaches the basics of animal health, how to do a basic exam on animal mannequins. Children will also be participating in animal games and crafts.

July 18: 9 a.m.-Noon – Small Animal Care and Crafts ($15) – Children will meet small animals, learn about their care and do participate in animal-themed games and crafts.

July 20: 9 a.m.-Noon – Walk on the Wild Side ($15) – Children learn about Florida’s native wildlife, meet some animals and will participate in games and crafts highlighting wildlife.

July 22: 9 a.m.-Noon – Art and Nature ($15) – Children will be able to draw, paint and participate in crafts and games involving animals and nature at the shelter. Children will also meet and learn about the shelter’s farm animals.
