Chinese Takeout Container Inspires Winning Entry

VERO BEACH — When the Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne issued an invitation to area artists to create a work of art inspired by a Chinese takeout container, local photographer and painter Betsy McKean rose to the challenge.

She digitally photographed a couple of the ubiquitous containers and layered the images in her computer to create a striking modernist design.

Titled “Converging Containers,” the photograph was chosen to be included in the All Florida Competition and Exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. 1,800 artworks by 600 artists were submitted for consideration; only 101 artists made the cut.

In addition to Betsy McKean’s work, an oil portrait painting titled “Ed” by Ellen Fischer will represent Vero Beach in the show.

The 60th annual All Florida Competition can be seen at the Boca Raton Museum of Art from June 26 through September 11.

The museum is located at 501Plaza Real in Mizner Park, Boca Raton.  Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday Noon to 5 p.m., and the first Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
